Outline and Purpose of the Course We will read an English-language textbook that outlines model studies in modern sociology, while also learning both the fundamental topics of sociology and how to read English-language texts on sociology. At each class session, presenters will create and present a summary of their parts of the text, including a digest and a glossary. Following this, all class members will think about and discuss the reported content.
Course Goals Understand the viewpoints and interesting qualities of modern sociological studies, and learn sociological thought. Understand the meaning and treatment of sociological concepts, as well as their correspondence with translational equivalents, while also cultivating the knowledge required for reading sociological works in English.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
Weeks 2-15: Reading of textbook. Each class session, one chapter will be assigned to approximately two students, who will report on the content.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments based on report summaries (70%) and class participation (30%).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students must come to class having read the text each time. Furthermore, the students reporting should be particularly aware of how to translate sociology terms as they draft their summaries.
