Outline and Purpose of the Course This class will allow students to experience the marvels of various linguistic phenomena, allowing them to correctly understand the breadth and depth of language.
Course Goals Students will improve their ability to independently notice what constitutes language phenomena, as well as how they are discovered and explained; they will also improve their abilities to discover and explain these phenomena on their own.
Schedule and Contents Through observing phenomena in modern Japanese (standard language), which is the language most familiar to many students, they will learn fundamental information and techniques regarding linguistics. Students will grasp the phenomena of the specific data presented and actively participate in discussions on the unusualness and comprehension of the data; based on this, they will need to think even more deeply on their own. The following is a summary of planned topics.
 Week 1: Introduction, What Is a Linguistic Phenomenon?
 Weeks 2-5: What Does This Word Mean?
 Weeks 6-10: Why Do We Use This Phrasing to Express That Meaning?
 Weeks 11-14: What Is Language Doing?
 Week 15: Summary
(However, the schedule may be adjusted based on the number of students and their comprehension level)
Evaluation Methods and Policy Sum of active participation in discussions (40%), reports (30%), and presentations (30%).
