Outline and Purpose of the Course In this class, we will read the novel "Das Marmorbild" (1826) by the late Romantic writer Eichendorff. Set in the Italian town of Lucca, this work tells the story of a young man, Florio, who escapes the temptation of Venus and is connected to the innocent girl Bianca under the guidance of the poet Fortunato.
Course Goals ・Acquire reading comprehension skills for literary works written in German.
・Deepen understanding of the literary world of Eichendorff.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
 Explanation of Eichendorff's life and works.
Weeks 2-14: Reading Texts
 Close reading of the first half of the work.
Week 15: Summary
 Summary of class content.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be assessed based on class participation, including active participation in class and achievement of learning objectives.
Course Requirements Preferable to have intermediate-level skills in the German language.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) The class will be run on a reading-in-turns format, so always come to class prepared.
