Outline and Purpose of the Course We will study parts of the great book of former professor at the College de France, Rolf A. Stein: La civilisation tibetaine. It is a master work, offering a complete geographical, historical, social, cultural, religious and philosophical overview of Tibetan civilization. The author has used Tibetan and Chinese original sources as well as the accounts of foreign travelers and modern scholarship. We will particularly examined passages dealing with the Tibetan assimilation of Buddhism, placing Tibet as the crossroads of the great civilizations of India and China.
Course Goals Being able to Read French academic literature in Indian, Tibetan & Buddhist studies in relation to their primary sources
Schedule and Contents Class 1. General introduction about Tibetan civilization

Class 2-15. Reading the French text
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation is made according to participation.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Tibetan texts and secondary literature will be provided or indicated at each class for the preparation of the next class.
