Outline and Purpose of the Course | Study of the Pasupatas, the oldest religious group of Saivism, has made the significant progress in recent decades with the discovery and publication of new material. In this class I will deal with the Pasupata-sutra, the oldest extant doctrinal scripture of the group, accompanied by Kaundinya’s commentary, and aim at reconsidering the formation process of the scripture, the relationship between the Sutra and its commentary, the continuity from the Vedic religion to the Pasupatas, the position of the group in the Saivism in general and so on. | |||
Course Goals | Students can be acquainted with the style of religious scripture and its commentary, and acquire a deeper knowledge of the early Hinduism from the viewpoint of Saivism. | |||

Class 1: Introduction to the Pasupatas Classes 2: Recent trends of the Pasupata study: some passages related with the Pasupatas in the recently discovered literature and the relevant epigraphical material Class 3: An overview of the Pasupata-sutra Classes 4-6: An overview of Chapter 1 of the Pasupatasutra with its commentary Classes 7-10: Intensive reading and explanation of Chapter 2 of the Pasupatasutra with its commentary Classes 11-14: Intensive reading and explanation of Chapter 3 of the Pasupatasutra with its commentary Class 15: Concluding discussion |
