Outline and Purpose of the Course Building on the previous semester, we will read the introduction of the Compendium of Modern Chinese Literature (『中国新文学大系』).
Course Goals Learn how to use the information and materials necessary for reading modern Chinese literature, while also cultivating the skills to read literary works based on the background of the early 20th century period. Of these, we will emphasize accurate reading comprehension and literary appreciation abilities. We will also cultivate students' research and presentation skills by requiring them to independently examine and present information on the historical background of the works in question, as well as how these works are positioned within these contexts.
Schedule and Contents Read the Compendium of Modern Chinese Literature (『中国新文学大系』) introduction. Students must come to class prepared.
In class, all students will be responsible for translations, and will be asked to read related works to help them discover their own study topics.
Week 1: Review of Previous Term
Weeks 2-5: Read『中国新文学大系』導論「戯劇」
Week 6: Discuss 「戯劇」
Weeks 7-9: Read『中国新文学大系』導論「詩集」
Week 10: Discuss 「詩集」
Weeks 11-14: Read 『中国新文学大系』導論「建設理論」
Week 15: Summary Discussion
Students will be responsible for surveying materials related to the discussion.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Class participation assessment. The assessment targets will be not only reading skills, but also statements and survey reports during discussions.
Course Requirements A course shared by the entire university. Students should be studying intermediate-level Chinese language.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students should attend class having prepared a translation of the original text. They should also actively participate in class discussions, and take their share of the literature review.
