| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
Chinese literary works from the start of the 20th century represented a clear departure from classical literary works. The foundations of this literary style were built by the colloquial Chinese movement, which unfolded in the setting of New Youth (『新青年』), published in 1915. Through the May Fourth Movement of 1919, and through disputes involving various literary associations and trends of thought, modern literary works were gradually created. This process confers a number of implications for considering "modern times" in China. In this course, by reading representative works from this formative period of new literature, we will aim to learn foundational information regarding Chinese language and literature, such as modernity in Chinese literature, as well as the correlation between colloquial Chinese and classical Chinese writing styles. This year, we will read the introduction of the Compendium of Modern Chinese Literature (『中国新文学大系』). |

| Course Goals | Learn how to use the information and materials necessary for reading modern Chinese literature, while also cultivating the skills to read literary works based on the background of the early 20th century period. Of these, we will emphasize accurate reading comprehension and literary appreciation abilities. We will also cultivate students' research and presentation skills by requiring them to independently examine and present information on the historical background of the works in question, as well as how these works are positioned within these contexts. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
Read the Compendium of Modern Chinese Literature (『中国新文学大系』) introduction. Students must come to class prepared. In class, all students will be responsible for translations, and will be asked to read related works to help them discover their own study topics. Week 1: Explanation of Materials and References Weeks 2-4: Read 『中国新文学大系』導論「小説」（一） Weeks 5-7: Read『中国新文学大系』導論「小説」（二） Weeks 8-10: Read『中国新文学大系』導論「小説」（三） Week 11: Discuss 「小説」 Weeks 12-14: Read 『中国新文学大系』導論「散文」 Week 15: Discuss of 「散文」 During class, the plan is to assign each student a literature review to use as discussion materials. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy | Class participation assessment. The assessment targets will be not only reading skills, but also statements and survey content during discussions. | |||

A course shared by the entire university. Students should be studying intermediate-level Chinese language. |
