Outline and Purpose of the Course | Students will gain a rough framework of the various dialects in China and an overview of the characteristics of each dialect. The course also introduces the relationship between middle Chinese phonology and old Chinese phonology from a historical perspective. | |||

Schedule and Contents |
The course will proceed according to the following schedule. However, the order and the number of classes assigned to each topic might change depending on the progress of the course and students. Part 1: The basics Weeks 1-3: Orientation; review of tone phonetics, phonological theories, and Chinese phonology predicates Weeks 4-6: Overview of Chinese dialects Weeks 7-9: Relationship between middle Chinese phonology and old Chinese phonology; methods for studying Chinese dialects Part 2: Particular cases and findings from recent studies Weeks 10-14: Each week, we will look at a different dialect and discuss its characteristics. Week 15: Feedback |
