Outline and Purpose of the Course | Chinese language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and has its rich historical resources. This course is designed to familiarize advanced undergraduate students with basic knowledge of its history of writing and phonology. | |||
Course Goals | This course introduces history of Chinese writings and historical phonology and serves to prepare students for more advanced courses in Chinese linguistics and Chinese literature. Students are expected at the end of the course to have gained a basic knowledge of the Chinese writing system as well as Chinese historical phonology. | |||

History of Chinese writing (1): Shuowen Jiezi and Chinese character classification 5. History of Chinese writing (2): Oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, Warring States writing 6. History of Chinese writing (3): Unification, vulgar writing, regular script 7. Reconstruction of historical pholology 8. Middle Chinese phonology (1): rhyme book and fanqie 9. Middle Chinese phonology (2): tones and initials 9. Middle Chinese phonology (3): rhymes 10. Middle Chinese phonology (4): rhyme table 11. Late Middle Chinese phonology 12. Evaluation Methods and Policy | Attend class regularly and participate actively (20%). Students have to submit thirteen homework assignments every week (each about 1200-1600 characters in Japanese) (50%), final examination(30%). | |||
