| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
・In this seminar, by closely reading technical books in French on Western art, we aim to study expressions of passions in paintings, while also improving our level of French language reading comprehension. ・Specifically, we will do a close reading of Charles Le Brun's conference about The Gathering of the Manna by Nicolas Poussin, one of the lectures held in the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1667, while also studying the representations of emotions through gesture and facial expression. Furthermore, we will learn how history paintings were argued in the early days of the academy, by examining various points and terminology to analyse narrative paintings and the depiction of the passage of time in the visual arts. | Course Goals |
・Acquire the reading comprehension skills necessary for reading technical works in French on Western art history. ・Deepen our understanding of methods for expressing emotions through gesture and facial expression in 17th-century narrative paintings. |

| Schedule and Contents |
Week 1: Introduction We will first give an overview explanation of the text to be read and present references helpful for understanding the content, study preparation methods, and assessment methods. We will also distribute copies of the text and present an overview of the text, so those who wish to take the class should attend the first session without fail. We will also conduct a survey to find out student interests, areas of expertise, and requests for the class. Weeks 2-15: Close Reading of the Text At the start of the class, we will have a quiz to translate part of the text. Then, students will take turns reading the text line by line. Progress will vary drastically depending on the proficiency level of the readers, so an exact plan of each class session cannot be posted. However, we will generally plan to read one to two pages per session. Supplementary explanations will be given for grammar items, terminology, historical events, and research history, as needed. Regarding feedback, the lecturer will correct and return each quiz to students, and there will be nothing in particular at the end of the semester. Any doubts can also be answered by email. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Assessment of quizzes in each class session (text translations: 50%) and final reports (translation of a paper related to one's area of expertise: 50%) from the perspectives of grammar comprehension, appropriate translations, and content comprehension. ・Students may refer to their preparation notes and text entries during the quizzes. ・As a general rule, credit will not be given to students with four or more absences. ・As a general rule, late arrivals and early departures will be treated as absences. |

・For preparation, students should independently conduct close readings of the text, look up unknown terms and grammar points, and prepare to be able to translate adequately. They should also examine proper nouns, iconographies, illustrations that appear in the text ahead of time. ・For review, students should re-examine their own translations based on class presentations and commentary. They should also list the standard translations of technical terms. |
