Outline and Purpose of the Course The notion of “world literature” was for the first time proposed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. After having played an important role in the process of institutionalization of literature in the past centuries, this notion gains a new actuality because nowadays, the importance of transgressive interaction between cultures that exceeds the frame works of nation-states attracts more and more attention in the course of globalization. In this class, we are going to read research literature that analyzes German literature in relation to “world literature”.
Course Goals Students will on the one hand get acquainted with the habit of academic reading and on the other hand have a critical view over the current situation of research.
