Outline and Purpose of the Course Read poems dating from the Tang Dynasty, which was rich in esteemed authors and works. Read from the text of 300 Tang Poems, a well-known standard anthology of Tang poetry in China, which also highlights the main forms of classical poetry.
Course Goals ・Master the peculiar meter of Chinese classical poetry by reading aloud in modern Chinese.
・Understand the forms of Chinese classical poetry.
・Acquire basic skills for reading comprehension of Chinese classical poetry and prose using modern Chinese commentary for clues.
・Able to comprehend what is being expressed in Tang poetry, including the cultural background.
Schedule and Contents Reading shall proceed according to the following schedule. Includes reading comprehension of annotations and explanations in modern Chinese.
1st: Tang poetry overview, and checking use of text
2nd - 4th: Chinese quatrain
5th - 8th: Lushi verse
9th - 11th: Ancient poems
12th - 14th: Yuefu
15th: Conclusion
Evaluation Methods and Policy Performance (including evaluation of Chinese pronunciation) 70%, exam 30%.
Course Requirements Class recommended mainly to undergraduates who have already studied beginner and intermediate Chinese for about one and a half years in common core courses. Students make an effort at accurate pronunciation.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Attend class having sufficiently practiced and read over commentary so able to read poetry text with accurate pronunciation.
