Outline and Purpose of the Course Zeng Gong (1019-1083) in Northern Song is a master of ancient writing and counted among the Eight Masters of the Tang and Song. In this seminar, we shall take turns reading the preface by Zeng Gong.
Course Goals ・Able to smoothly read aloud classical Chinese.
・ Able to comprehend what is being expressed in ancient written texts considering the cultural background.
・ Understand characteristics of expressions in ancient writings.
Schedule and Contents Readings will proceed roughly according to the following schedule, but will be adjusted according to comprehension level of attendees.
1st Overview of ancient writings and Zeng Gong, and confirming use of text

Evaluation Methods and Policy According to performance (active class participation, proficiency in reading aloud in Chinese, text comprehension).
Course Requirements Have academic ability to study intermediate Chinese in common core courses, and pronounce words accurately. Presumes sufficient time will be spent on preparation, as marked in the outside class learning field.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Attend prepared to look up character sounds so entire text can be read clearly in Chinese, and accurately translated.
