Outline and Purpose of the Course It is well known that Nishida developed his body theory in his late philosophy. However, few studies have focused on this theory. Why? The starting point of Nishida’s philosophy was his initial work 善の研究 [The Study of Goodness], but less attention has been paid to body theory within this work. Unless we build an understanding of body theory that starts from The Study of Goodness, it will be hard to illuminate the significance of late Nishida philosophy’s body theory or its scope. In addition, Nishida’s body theory has consistently raised sharp questions about the situation surrounding modern Japanese bodies. To understand the body theory of the early and late Nishida philosophy and compare it with the contemporary condition of the body, we will read the book When a stiff body unwinds こわばる身体がほどけるとき [When a Stiff Body Unwinds], which was written based on the above-mentioned concerns. We will also examine other specific writings of Nishida that I have used as the basis of my research and discuss these in class. In relation to my work, I would like to re-sketch a thicker central line and explore other lines of thought that I have not been able to include in my existing work.
