Outline and Purpose of the Course The main purpose of this course is to equip students with the skills they need to undertake research on the history of the Islamic world.
Course Goals Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
(1) Acquire knowledge of the basic tools required in research such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, websites, and so on.
(2) Be equipped to decide and choose their own topics of research.
(3) Be able to present a professional paper on his/her topic of research.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Languages required to study specific periods and regions in history and their dictionaries
Week 2: Encyclopedias and guidebooks for research
Week 3: Websites
Weeks 4-6: How to read and use professional papers while doing research
Weeks 7-9: Students make short presentations on the times and regions they choose as their topics of research
Weeks 10-12: Students make short professional paper presentations in Japanese on their topics of research
Weeks 13-15: Students make short professional paper presentations in English on their topics of research
Evaluation Methods and Policy Participation in class (50%), presentations (50%)

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to prepare adequately for their presentations.
