Outline and Purpose of the Course This class will have three professors leading in a relay format. In studies of Asian history, and all periods of Chinese history in particular, how do we search for previous studies? How do we handle ancient documents? How are computers used in these studies? In addition to getting practice in these topics, students will choose their own topic and present a "short paper."
Course Goals Learn the fundamental skills needed for writing a graduation these on Asian history.
Schedule and Contents Weeks 1-15:
This class is primarily for third-year students. Over the course of one year, all the professors in the Asian history specialization will teach students the tools for researching Asian history, while also having students actually use them. Along with teaching methods for searching previous studies, they will also have students select outstanding previous studies and learn what their predecessors achieved, while thinking about the state of research in which they are positioned.
By around November, students will have completed their learning of tools and reading of previous studies and will choose research topics based on their own interests regarding the issues discussed. Using the knowledge and methods they learned earlier as a foundation, they will seek out previous studies on their own, or read parts of original texts, to contribute solutions to the issues they have taken up. In around mid-January, they will present this as a "mini-thesis" in class.
*Feedback methods will be explained in class.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessments of class participation and presentation of the "mini thesis."
