Outline and Purpose of the Course The purpose of this lab is to learn basic geography skills, experience field work and writing reports, and master the basic skills for geographic surveys.
Course Goals Learn the basic skills for conducting geographic surveys and analysis, and develop the ability to use them in writing graduate papers.
Schedule and Contents 1.Orientation (1st session)
2.Reading topographical maps and deciphering aerial photographs (2nd session)
3.Topographical and vegetation survey (Mt. Yoshida) and analysis thereof (2nd session)
4.Vegetation field work (Mt. Daimonji) (1st session)
4.How to do field work on nature, society, occupations, and culture (5th session)
5.Preliminary survey for lab trip (5th session)
6.Basics of GIS (geography information system) (4th session)
7.Primary statistical mapping using GIS (4th session)
8.Statistical analysis using GIS (3rd session)
9.Lab trip (see note)
10.Lap trip survey reports (3rd session)
Instructions on feedback given during class.
NOTE: The October lab trip (3 nights, 4 days) consists of field work at local municipal agencies. A "preliminary report" will be compiled on the survey theme and survey plan prior to the survey. In addition, after the survey, a "Lab trip report" will be compiled.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated according to overall consideration of performance (60%) and submissions in response to assignments (40%).

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) There are many assignments such as short papers, making drawings, and writing reports which should be diligently worked upon in non-class hours.
