Outline and Purpose of the Course The objective is to master archeological methodologies and basic knowledge. In class, students will carefully read important papers on archaeology, analyze and refer to its content and logical configuration, and critically approach the main themes and methodologies in modern archaeology. In addition, depending on the circumstances, lab activities will be conducted for students to actually observe, record. and report on archaeological and historical resources.
Course Goals Develop the ability to carefully read academic papers and properly understand their content and logical configuration.
Master basic methodologies in archaeology through study of academic papers.
Master techniques for properly observing, recording, and reporting on archaeological and historical resources.
Schedule and Contents Presenters refer to the content of assigned papers and elective papers together with basic archaeological and historical resources, and point out the logical structure and problems in those papers. Attendees will question presentation content and offer counterarguments. In addition, depending on the circumstances, lab activities may be conducted for actually observing, recording and reporting on archaeological and historical resources. Class will roughly proceed as follows despite changes depending on the number of participants.

First semester
1st: Guidance (explanation of lesson plan and determination of reporting order)
2nd: Course (seminar agenda)
3rd - 14th: Reporting and discussion of assigned papers
15th: Determination of summer term topic assignments

Second semester
1st - 3rd: Reporting and discussion of summer term topics
4th - 15th: Reporting and discussion of assigned papers
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated based on how much students are able to clearly analyze and understand topic papers, and ability to actively participate in discussions of papers by other attendees. Any additional papers that are assigned as needed will also serve as evaluation references.
Course Requirements Presumes students will make presentations when attending class.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students will naturally read their own assigned papers, and will also read those of other participants. In addition, each student will read books and papers on basic archaeology methodologies, and thereby deepen their understanding.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Not used, each student prepares outline for presentation.
References, etc. Introduced during class, presenters search through references books on presentation content. Instructors may introduce at any time.
