Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, students will read Suluk al-Muluk, the early 16th century Central Asian governance manual compiled by Ibn Ruzbihan, a Shafiite ulama who fled there to avoid persecution by the Shiite Safavids. The work comprises citations from different Arabic lawbooks that were translated into Persian by the author. We can easily identify the original Arabic text in each part of the work because of the annotations made by the author indicating the sources used. Students will get to read the work both in Persian and Arabic, which will help them gain insights on the extent to which Arabic syntax left its mark on translated text.
Course Goals Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
(1) Gain an in-depth understanding of both Persian and Arabic grammar and the ability to read historical texts written in these languages accurately.
