Outline and Purpose of the Course This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge and skills required to engage in research on the history of the Islamic world by focusing on the essential teachings of Islam, crucial events in its history, and so on.
Course Goals Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
(1) Acquire knowledge to understand the current state of the contemporary Islamic world.
(2) Obtain knowledge required for research on the history of the Islamic world.
Schedule and Contents Contours of the contemporary Islamic world (3 weeks)
Basic teachings of Islam (3 weeks)
al-Quran and Hadith (Traditions around the words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad) (3 weeks)
Brief explanation of the history of the Islamic world (6 weeks)
Islamic law (3 weeks)
Conducting research on the history of the Islamic world: The use of dictionaries, tools, and the typology of historical sources (3 weeks)
Waqf (pious donations) (3 weeks)
The mode of transmitting knowledge in the pre-modern Islamic world: The curriculum of madrasas (3 weeks)
Sufism in history (3 weeks)
Sharia Court documents (3 weeks)
