Outline and Purpose of the Course This year, we will read M.S. Saarela’s The Early Modern Travels of Manchu: A Script and Its Study in East Asia, 2020. This book explores how Han-Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, and Europeans have approached the Manchu language and script, the lingua franca of the Great Qing Empire. Although Manchu language itself has a small influence on each society, the linguistic approach of those who studied Manchu language is closely related to their respective linguistic views, and this book can be read also as a case-study of comparative-language and cross-cultural theory.
This class is not compulsory for students who hope to be assigned to the Oriental History specialization . I welcome students who are interested in early modern global history,
