Outline and Purpose of the Course | The ability to read old manuscripts accurately and to handle them properly is a fundamental skill in studying Japanese history. The purpose of this class is to develop the ability to accurately read kuzushi-ji characters and understand the contents of descriptions by deciphering the historical materials of letters in the Meiji period held by the Kyoto University Museum, as well as to acquire the skills to understand the types and characteristics of modern documents and to properly handle modern documents. | |||

Schedule and Contents |
1st: Introduction The nature of the documents to be covered, dictionaries and reference books to be used, and how to proceed with the class will be introduced. 2nd-14th: Deciphering modern documents in the collection of the Kyoto University Museum. Two teachers and a teaching assistant will provide one-on-one guidance. 15th: Summary and final examination |
