Outline and Purpose of the Course The ability to read and understand ancient and medieval documents correctly and handle them appropriately is a fundamental skill required for studying Japanese history. In this course, students will be able to accurately read the cursive form of Japanese script and develop the ability to understand the contents. Further, they will also learn about the concept of paleography and acquire basic knowledge on the subject, with the aim of learning how to properly handle ancient and medieval texts.
Course Goals Upon their successful completion of this course, students will:
-be able to correctly read the cursive form of Japanese script, and acquire the basic ability to understand the text.
-possess basic knowledge and comprehend the concept of paleography.
-possess the skills to properly handle ancient and medieval documents.
Schedule and Contents Lecture 1: Introduction
The fundamental aspects of handling ancient and medieval documents will be explained. Information pertaining to the dictionaries and reference books used in class will be given and information regarding how classes will proceed will also be provided.
Lectures 2 - 14: Reading Ancient and Medieval Documents from the Collection at the Kyoto University Museum The following documents will be covered one at a time: 東大寺 Todai-ji、宝積寺 Hoshaku-ji、淡輪 Tannowa、烟田 Kamata、西山地蔵院 Nishiyamajizo-in、松尾月読社 Matsuo-tsukiyomi-sha, and 、祇園社 Gion-sha. Two teachers and one teaching assistant will provide one-on-one instruction for students endeavoring to read the documents.
Lecture 15: Review and Final Exam
Evaluation Methods and Policy Overall evaluation of class participation (50%) and a test at the end of the practical training (50%).
Course Requirements This course is intended for students specializing in Japanese history.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Learn paleography through self-study based on instructions given in class.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Instructions will be given during class.
References, etc. Will be introduced during class. Students are expected to procure references for cursive forms, such as『くずし字解読辞典』and『くずし字用例辞典』independently.
