Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will conduct an intensive reading of essays that comprise the basis of Japanese history studies, and discuss the contents of each. The aim is to cultivate basic knowledge about the ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern periods, as well as understand trends in the research and its goals and issues.
Course Goals Upon their successful completion of this course, students will: -possess basic knowledge pertaining to each period of Japanese history -understand the trends in research regarding Japanese history, as well as its goals and issues.
Schedule and Contents Lecture 1: Introduction
Instruct the students on how classes will proceed and best practices for preparing and making their presentations. Determine which portions are assigned to each student.
Lectures 2 - 29: Intensive Reading and Discussion of Essays Intensive reading of two papers will be done in each lecture. The student leading the presentation will prepare a resume and present the outline of the paper, and will also solicit his or her fellow students' opinions and questions. The other students should also read the paper and prepare their opinions and questions in advance. Further, a class discussion will be conducted for each paper.
Lecture 30: Conclusion
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on class participation and deliverables. The breakdown is as follows: preparation and attendance (50%), content of report (20%), and participation in class discussion (30%). Students must have attended the classes focused on all four historical periods: Ancient History, Medieval History, Early-modern History, and Modern History.
Course Requirements Students taking this course must have taken “Japanese History B” in high school or possess an equivalent level of knowledge. If at all possible, this course should be taken in the second year of study.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Read the articles covered in each class and notate all opinions and questions. Students are also required to read the previous studies cited as references.
