Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is a comparative introduction to private law in Europe. The first introductory part will give an overview of the historical foundations of European legal systems and the most important legal families in Europe, in particular common law and the French and German legal families. The second and main part will take up various legal problems in the different areas of private law such as, for example, contract law, property law and family law, and compare the approaches and solutions taken in European legal systems. The course will conclude with exploring the role of comparative law in European private law.
Course Goals ・Obtain a basic knowledge of the major European legal systems.
・Analyze various legal questions in the area of private law from a comparative law perspective.
・Obtain a basic knowledge of the aims and methods of comparative law.
