Outline and Purpose of the Course This is a course on research writing in English. The purpose is for students to develop, practice, and sharpen critical thinking skills, critical writing skills, and research skills through the active use of academic English. The instructor will expect a higher level of research and higher quality of paper than the first semester.

本授業では、英語によるリサーチライティングを扱う。本授業では、受講者が学術英語を積極的に使用して、批判的思考、批判的な書き方、およびリサーチスキルを向上し練習し研ぎ澄ますことを目的とする。前期よりも高いレベルの研究と論文が期待されます。
Course Goals By the end of this course, students will have read and be able to write the basic features of an academic research paper; for example, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion. Furthermore, student will have built the research skills of locating previous research, building and implementing a research plan, collecting materials, and analyzing and explaining results. Students will also have a chance to present these results orally.
Schedule and Contents Students must actively participate in the class and complete weekly homework assignments. The final report for this class is a research paper of 1,000 or more words.

Topics in the course (some of the topics may be covered in more than one class):

-Correctly formatting academic writing
-Correctly structuring academic paragraphs and essays
-Practicing citation methods to avoid plagiarism
-Writing professional emails
-Formulating a research question, hypothesis, and research plan
-Writing various parts of an academic paper
-Using evidence (findings from research) properly and effectively
-Revising several drafts of a research paper
-Submitting research paper for review and giving feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Student involvement = 20%
Assignment 1 = 30%

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) For homework, students will primarily practice academic writing and conduct research.
