Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This course will provide students with new strategies to become more confident readers. It will focus on building English vocabulary, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Students will learn skills such as predicting the topic, skimming for the main idea, scanning, and recognizing different points of view by reading texts from a variety of topics and themes. Although the main focus will be on reading, students will also improve their writing skills through reading reports, and be introduced to some of the most commonly used vocabulary and idioms found in written English today. 授業は英語で行いますが、学生は日本語で質問しても構いません。 |

Course Goals |
The overall goal of this course is to assist students in developing the reading skills necessary to comprehend English texts, and to be able to write reports on texts they have read. Students will learn to: 1) Understand meaning: deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words and word groups, relations within the sentence/complex sentences, and information not explicitly stated. 2) Understand relationships in the text: focus on the text structure, understand the communicative value of sentences and the relations between the parts of a text through lexical and grammatical cohesion devices and indicators in discourse. 3) Understand important points: distinguish the main ideas from supporting details, recognise unsupported claims and claims supported by evidence, extract salient points to summarise, follow an argument, and read critically to evaluate the text. 4) Read efficiently: survey the text, chapter/article, or paragraphs, skim for the gist/ general impression, scan to locate specifically required information, and read quickly. 5) Reflect on texts: write reports on texts read, including a summary of the main idea and details, a critical reflection of the content in relation to other read texts, and the readers own opinion on the topic. |

Evaluation Methods and Policy |
Evaluation will be based on active participation in class (20%), weekly review tasks (20%), and three reading reports (60%). 5回以上欠席した場合は成績評価の対象としない。 |
