Outline and Purpose of the Course In this class we will think about the problem of what it means to do philosophy in Japan. To do this we need to think about the difference between "Japanese philosophy," "philosophy in Japan," and "thought" (思想).
The focus of the seminar will be Japanese philosophy in the 20th century, especially the Kyoto-school.
Course Goals In this class, students will learn to
-critically reflect on the universality of philosophy
-recognize the main ideas of Japanese philosophy in the 20th century
-reconstruct the arguments of the different authors
