| Outline and Purpose of the Course | この授業では、英語リーディング・スキルの習得と向上を目的とする。学術的文体の英文を精読し、構文や文法を把握すると共に、著者の意図を適正に解釈する力を身につけ、英語による議論の構成を学習する。 | |||

| Schedule and Contents |
この授業では、言語および言語学に関する概説書である The 5 Minute Linguist: Bite-Sized Essays on Language and Languages から、受講者の関心のあるトピックを選び、読み進めていく。各トピックは3ページ前後の長さで、一般読者向けにわかりやすく説明されている。 授業では毎回、1～2つのトピックを取り上げ、授業冒頭で小テストを行う。授業期間内に少なくとも1つのトピックについてプレゼンテーションを行うこととする。 第1回：Introduction 第2回～7回：テキストの講読、プレゼンテーション（各回1～2トピック） 第8回：中間テスト 第9～14回：テキストの講読、プレゼンテーション（各回1～2トピック） 第15回：期末テスト 第16回：フィードバック なおテキストには66のトピックが収録されており、以下はその一部である。 授業で扱うトピックは初回授業時、受講者の投票によって決定する予定。 ・How many languages are there in the world? ・What is an artificial language? ・Do animals use language? ・How many kinds of writing system are there? ・How many languages can a person learn? ・How good is machine translation? ・What makes some languages harder to learn than others? |

5回以上欠席した場合は成績評価の対象としない。 小テスト・中間テスト・期末テストの成績 (80&) および平常点（プレゼンテーションを含む）(20%) から総合的に評価する。 評価および授業の進め方についての詳細は、初回授業で説明する。 |
