Outline and Purpose of the Course Since the invention of computer, languages have also been its target. In this lecture we read a paper on the entropy of English. In addition we learn the vocabulary and usage of articles to prepare writing papers in the near future.
Course Goals Students will have an experience to read an academic paper and know its structure. And they will be conscious of their problems to write ones.
Schedule and Contents We read "Prediction and Entropy of Printed English" [Shannon 51] or "An Estimate of an Upper Bound for the Entropy of English" [Brown et al. 92] and sometimes solve fill-in-the-blank questions for selections of articles, prepositions, etc.
