Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, students are encouraged to actively practice their oral English and improve their critical thinking skills. The course is based on group discussion and debate. Each class centers on certain viewpoints of some article from social media such as newspapers and magazines. Students will be divided into several groups. Each group will be paired with another one and two groups work as separately the positive side to support the viewpoints and the negative side to fight against the viewpoints. The article will be assigned prior to the class and students who are engaged in the positive or negative sides need to prepare materials to support their arguments in advance.
Course Goals This course is aimed at helping students sharpen their economic thinking and improve English reading and presentation skills in economics. Also, students are expected to learn how to collect evidence to concisely support their arguments.
Schedule and Contents First class (1): Introduction and guidance

Regular class (2-14): The articles will be distributed among students in advance. Students who attend the debate need to seek facts or data in advance to support the arguments in their class presentation.

Fifteenth class (15): Feedback class


The materials are mainly selected from Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Economists, and Financial Times.

Supporting materials in the debate are collected by students themselves.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are required to read all the materials and make necessary preparation for class discussion.
