Outline and Purpose of the Course | This online course is designed to provide an introduction to key concepts and research in the field of computer assisted language learning (CALL). | |||
Course Goals | This course will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts and issues associated with the use of new technologies in language education. | |||
Schedule and Contents | This course will focus on providing an overview of the technological, theoretical and pedagogical issues raised by the application of computer technology in language education. In this context, areas such as pedagogy, technology and second language acquisition theory will also be investigated with the aim of providing students with a through understanding of the impact of computer technologies on second language learning and teaching. Moreover, on completion of this course students will be able to effectively apply new knowledge regarding CALL in their teaching. Areas covered will include software evaluation, CALL authoring, courseware management, data driven learning and computer mediated communication (CMC). | |||
Evaluation Methods and Policy |
This course has two main requirements, regular attendance and submission of a 3,000 word paper (due by the end of the semester) focusing on an aspect of CALL. Examples of suitable topics include: evaluation of a CALL software package critical review of a CALL web site critical review of a CALL article or book creation of and rationale for a CALL task feedback on participation in a CALL activity Assessment will be based on the above factors. |
