Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will experience field research in UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site on Yakushima Island. Students at Kyoto University and guest students from abroad work together.
Course Goals To acquire basic knowledge and skills of field research.
To learn the process of scientific field research, including planning, data and sample collections, data analysis
and presentation of results.
To work and live with students from different countries, communicating in English and other languages.

Sept. 11: Deadline for application
Oct. 21 or 22: Guidance
Oct. 24-30: Fieldwork on Yakushima Island
1st day: Move to Yakushima Island and preparation for fieldwork.
2nd-5th day: Data collection in the field
6th day: Data analysis and presentation of the results
7th day: Leave Yakushima Island
Course Requirements Total number of students is limited and we may not accept all the applicants. Application for the course before the deadline is necessary (around September 11). See the web site for detail.

We recommend to take "Advanced laboratory skills in field biology B", which is designed to connected to the present course and attend the "International seminar" to present the results of the courses.

Take out Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research, "Gakkensai".

Fluent in English is NOT required. We welcome students who have had few opportunities to communicate in English.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Read the documents on the safety measures and research procedure provided before the course.
Submit a report of the research after the course.
