Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will learn basic knowledge and skills of ecological and behavioral study on wild animals. We offer safety measures during field research and basic observation methods for behavior of animals, before field practice. In the field practice, students will experience fieldwork on Koshima Island. They will collect behavioral or ecological data on wild Japanese monkeys, analyze data, and present the results.
Course Goals To observe wild monkeys in natural conditions safely.
To collect data on the research topics that the attendee set by themselves, and report the results scientifically.
To understand safety measures during fieldwork.
Schedule and Contents The 4th and 5th weeks on April
We give lectures on safety measurements for fieldwork, observation methods of animals and contents of the
filed practice.
May 9 - 15
Field practice on Koshima Island
1st day: Arrive at Koshima Field Station and prepare for the stay on the island
2nd day: Set up a camp and preliminary observation of monkeys
3rd-4th days: Data collection of monkeys
5th day: Data collection of monkeys, and clear up a camp.
6th day: Data analysis, and presentation of the results.
7th day: Leave field station
Course Requirements Basic knowledge of biology
To take the "Fundamental Animal Behavior and Ecology (9623001)"
Take out Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research, "Gakkensai".
Take out the travel insurance which we specify, during the period of field practice, (We will give an instruction during class.)
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Before field practice, attendee must do the following by themselves;
Check the public transportation to and from Koshima Island, time of sunrise and sunset, and tide table.
Make a plan of meals and its budget during the field practice.
Prepare personal equipment for the field practice.
Submit the checklist of safety measure of Wildlife Research Center, take out "WRC travel insurance" using
the online system.
We will give an instruction during class.
