Outline and Purpose of the Course A volcanic eruption is a phenomenon in which underground magma is erupted to the surface of the earth, causing volcanic disasters due to various factors. Volcanic eruptions are rare phenomena among natural phenomena, and in many cases, the extent of their influence is limited, so it is difficult to imagine even a volcanic disaster. On the other hand, huge volcanic eruptions cause global disasters and are not unrelated. In this lecture, the diversity of volcanic eruption styles and the complexity of the eruption mechanism will be explained, and then the diversity of volcanic disasters and countermeasures will be explained. In addition, lectures on disaster prevention measures such as evacuation based on volcanic eruption prediction will be given by including an understanding of volcanic earthquakes and crustal deformation caused by magma intrusion prior to the eruption.
Course Goals Understand the diversity of volcanic eruption styles, the complexity of eruption mechanisms, and the diversity of volcanic disasters. In addition, it will be possible to consider measures to prevent volcanic disasters.
Schedule and Contents Intensive lectures will be given on the following issues.
1. Volcano eruption at active volcanoes
2. Volcanic explosion mechanism
3. Diversity of volcanic disasters and disaster prevention measures
4. Mechanism of volcanic earthquake
5. Relationship between seismicity and eruptive activity
6. Ground deformation and volcanic activity
7. Magma supply system
8. Volcano eruption prediction
