Outline and Purpose of the Course We will impart knowledge and help students improve their nursing skills in order to improve patients' management capabilities in areas of medication, the promotion of resilience, lifestyle adjustments, monitoring patients after administering medication, and evaluating drug use, with a focus on the medication necessary for emergency treatment, mitigation of symptoms, and management of chronic diseases.
Course Goals 1. Gain in-depth knowledge of drug use in clinical settings for various areas.
2. Explore advanced nursing practices related to monitoring patients on medication, making lifestyle adjustments, and improving the administration of medicines.
Schedule and Contents Session 1. Orientation and clinical pharmacology necessary for advanced nursing practice [Nin, Furuya]
We will present an outline of this course, and explain its aims, goals, and lesson plans.
We will explain the knowledge of clinical pharmacology that is required for advanced nursing practice.
Session 2. Drug dosages and reactions (PK/PD: pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics) [Chief pharmacist]
We will focus on the drugs necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and the management of chronic diseases, drug dosages, and reactions will be outlined with a focus on PK-PD theory.
Session 3. How to read drug package inserts, drug interactions, and polypharmacy [Omura]
We will provide an outline on the package inserts for drugs, medication interactions, and polypharmacy, with a focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will examine the role of advanced nursing practices in polypharmacy using case studies.
Session 4. Cardiovascular, diabetes, and endocrine medicines [Yonezawa]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will outline the basic uses of drugs, their effects and side effects, and the mechanisms of cardiovascular, diabetes, and endocrine drugs. We will also examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and evaluation of drug use as required for advanced nursing practice with respect to cardiovascular, diabetic, and endocrine drugs through case studies.
Session 5. Antineoplastic drugs [Yonezawa]
We will present an outline of the basic uses, mechanism of actions, medicinal effects, and side effects of antineoplastic drugs, with a focus on drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and evaluate drug use as necessary for advanced nursing practice with respect to antineoplastic drugs through case studies.
Session 6. Drugs for hematological, respiratory, and reproductive diseases and disorders [Nakagawa]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will also provide an outline of the basic uses of drugs, their effects and side effects, and the mechanisms of drugs for hematological, respiratory, and reproductive diseases and disorders. We will examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and evaluation of drug use as required for advanced nursing practice with respect to drugs for hematological, respiratory, and reproductive diseases and disorders through case studies.
Session 7. Basic uses of drugs for infectious diseases and TDM [Nakagawa]
We will provide an outline of the drugs used to treat infectious diseases through case studies with a focus on their basic modes of use and TDM.
Session 8. Psychiatric drugs [Imai]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will provide an outline of the basic uses of drugs, their effects and side effects, and mechanisms of psychiatric drugs. We will examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and the evaluation of drug use as required for advanced nursing practice with respect to psychiatric drugs through case studies.
Session 9. Autoimmune diseases, transplants, and immunosuppressants [Nakagawa]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will provide an outline of the basic uses of drugs, their effects and side effects, and mechanisms of immunosuppressants for autoimmune diseases and transplants. We will examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and the evaluation of drug use as necessary for advanced nursing practice with respect to immunosuppressants for autoimmune diseases and transplants.
Session 10. The mechanisms, medicinal effects, side effects, and basic uses of drugs for gastrointestinal diseases [Omura]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will also provide an outline of the basic uses of drugs, their effects and side effects, and mechanisms of drugs for gastrointestinal diseases. We will examine the promotion of recovery, lifestyle adjustments, patient monitoring after drug administration, and evaluation of drug use as necessary for advanced nursing practice with respect to drugs for gastrointestinal diseases.
Session 11. Antipyretic and analgesic drugs [Imai]
We will provide an outline and present the basic uses, mechanisms of action, medicinal effects, and side effects of antipyretic and analgesic drugs through case studies.
Session 12. Mother-and-child pharmacology [Chief Pharmacist]
We will outline the basic uses of drugs and the special characteristics of mother-and-child pharmacology. The role of advanced nursing practice will be examined based on case studies.
Session 13. Developmental pharmacology, characteristics of pediatric pharmacology, and the basic methods of drug usage [Nakagawa]
We will provide an outline of the basic uses of drugs and the special characteristics of pediatric pharmacology. The role of advanced nursing practice will be examined based on case studies.
Session 14. Alternative and Chinese medicine [Chief Pharmacist]
We will present an outline of the uses of Chinese and alternative medicine. We will examine the role of advanced nursing practices in the use of Chinese and alternative medicine through case studies.
Session 15. Pharmacological therapy and nursing in advanced nursing practice [Nin, Furuya]
We will focus on the drugs that are necessary for emergency treatment, symptom control, and chronic disease management. We will also examine problem solving methods relied on in responding to patients who have problems with their medication through case studies.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Comprehensive assessment based on participation in class (40%) and examination (60%).
