Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will learn the causes of diseases and physical dysfunctions resulting from the disruption and dysregulation of normal bodily functions at the organ, tissue, and cellular levels, gain comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis and of the mechanisms by which symptoms and complications progress, and acquire the ability to organize nursing by relying on the knowledge of pathophysiology as an advanced nurse practitioner.
Course Goals Students will be able to:
- understand the pathophysiological changes that occur in humans, and the relationship between pathophysiologically understanding symptoms, signs, and diseases, and their treatment.
- understand the pathological changes that are clinically important, incorporate microscopic exercises, and understand the pathological diagnosis and medical judgment process.
- infer pathophysiology from symptoms, signs, and findings that are commonly seen in everyday life.
- foresee shifts in symptoms, signs, and findings, and adjust their nursing based on those shifts.
- discuss nursing development from the perspective of advanced nursing practice, based on a knowledge of pathophysiology.
Schedule and Contents Session 1. General pathology: Concepts of health, disease, and death
We will provide an outline of this course, its aims, objectives and flow, the need for pathophysiology in advanced nursing practice, the basic concepts of health and disease, and the concept of death.
Session 2. Immunity and how it is created
We explain the mechanisms of inflammation and immunity, their significance for the body, and their main symptoms and treatments.
Session 3. Cancer biology
We explain the mechanisms and classifications of the occurrence and infiltration of cancer, and metastasis and its effects on the body.
Session 4. Diseases of the digestive system and their pathology
We explain the features of gastrointestinal diseases, and their pathology, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 5. Respiratory diseases and their pathology
We explain the characteristics of respiratory diseases, and their pathology, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 6. Diseases of the renal and urinary systems and their pathology
We explain the characteristics of the renal and urinary systems, and their pathology, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 7. Diseases of the central nervous system and the nervous system and their pathology
We explain the characteristics of the central nervous system and nervous system, and their pathology, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 8. Diseases of the cardiovascular system and their pathology
We explain the characteristics of the cardiovascular system, and its pathology, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 9. Orthopedic diseases and their pathology
We explain the pathophysiology of orthopedic diseases and changes because of aging, and their main symptoms and treatments.
Session 10. Psychiatric diseases and their pathology
We explain psychiatric diseases and their classifications, symptoms, and treatment.
Session 11. Seminar on the microscopy of histopathological specimens (1)
We learn the process of evaluating a pathological specimen from the beginning to the practical tissue diagnosis stage, and identify the factors that nurses should pay attention to in order to improve the accuracy of their diagnoses.
Session 12. Seminar on the microscopy of histopathological specimens (2)
We learn about the histological imaging of cancer and inflammation by looking at real specimens.
Session 13. Seminar on the microscopy of histopathological specimens (3)
We learn about pathogenic microorganisms by looking at real specimens.
Session 14. Clinical pathology and the latest in genome analysis
We explain the state of disease research using the latest methods of genomic analysis, the fundamentals of genetic testing, and the pathology of various genetic diseases.
Session 15. Development of cases displaying complex symptoms
We explain pathophysiology based on symptoms, signs, and laboratory findings surrounding complex symptoms displayed during adulthood, and consider clinical nursing decisions.
Evaluation Methods and Policy ・This will be assessed based on active participation in discussions (50 points), presentations (10 points), and examinations (40 points).
・Reports issued by each lecturer and individual reviews will be comprehensively assessed based on the degree to which the goals are achieved.
・Credit will not be awarded if classes are missed once.
・Taking the examination is mandatory.
・In presentations, high marks are awarded for originality.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) As lecture content is quite diverse, confirm the topics raised by each lecturer in advance, make use of what you already know with respect to the contents of each unit, conduct independent study such as literature searches, and participate proactively. Self-study and revision should take at least as much time as class does.
