Outline and Purpose of the Course To cultivate ethical sensitivity, which is the foundation of ethical nursing practice for advanced nurse practitioners, we outline fundamental knowledge and study the ethical issues and dilemmas arising out of healthcare policies, healthcare, nursing practice, nursing education, and research through the analysis of theory and values. We also cultivate the practical ability to define, analyze, and respond to the ethical issues arising out of clinical practice from the perspective of professional nurse practitioners using a structured approach that respects individual values together with the patient and stakeholders, and to discuss best practices and adjust ethics.
Course Goals Understand: 1. The laws and guidelines that form the foundation of the ethical nursing practice of advanced nurse practitioners and the fundamental knowledge of ethics.
2. The differences in ideas and values of each position in situations where ethical issues arise and analyze the situation as an advanced nurse practitioner.
3. The differences of opinions and ideas that arise in team medical care, the complexity of the problems and conflicts that accompany uncertainty, as well as specific approaches to solving them as an advanced nurse practitioner.
4. The ethical issues involved in clinical practice, and alongside cultivating judgement skills by solving these issues, acquire the knowledge necessary for ethical adjustment as an advanced nurse practitioner.
5. The rights and protections of those collaborating on research with respect to the ethics of nursing research.
Schedule and Contents Session 1. Orientation and the nursing profession and code of ethical practice (Takenouchi)
Orientation, the development of a code of ethical practice for nursing, its functions, common propositions, and the use of the code of ethical practice and ethics mediation as an advanced nurse practitioner
Session 2. Conflicts in values and ethical decision-making (Takenouchi)
Personal and professional values, conflicts of values, informed consent, and support for decision-making, Advance Care Planning
Session 3. Traditional Western ethics and ethical principles (Kodama)
Schools of ethics, ethical principles, beyond traditional ethical theories and principles, bioethics
Session 4. Clinical ethics and methods of examining case studies (Takenouchi)
Quality of life, medical futility, the method of analyzing and considering solutions based on Jonsen et al.'s four quadrants.
Session 5. Ethics and law (Hattori)
Nursing duties (Article 5 of the Act on Public Health Nurses, Midwives and Nurses, "Assistance in medical treatment and support of medical care"), institutional restrictions on nursing activities, and the role of nurses in team medicine
Sessions 6-7. Practice of case-led analysis in nursing situations and ethics mediation as nurse specialists (Tamura). Analysis of ethical issues and the practice of ethics mediation by nurse specialists
Session 8. The nursing profession and research ethics (Takenouchi)
Ethical issues in medical research for humans and ethical nursing research
