| Outline and Purpose of the Course |
This course is required for all students planning to complete a research project and thesis. Students will learn methods of formulating research questions, testing hypotheses, and presentation skills, required for their research project in the STiPS program. Peer discussion will also help cultivate students' abilities to think critically about their research. |

| Course Goals | This course aims to deepen students' understanding of social issues around science and technology using the framework of analysis in each field; these are discussed logically based on policy analysis methods. This course also aims to equip students with practical abilities through discussions with their peers. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
The students will prepare the presentation in advance in order to actively participate in the discussions. [Schedule and content] The following 15 lectures span the first and second semesters. Details to be announced in advance. ◇First semester 1st lecture : Orientation :Course objectives and outline (5/14). 2nd and 3rd lectures: Formulating research question/topic analysis: Selection of research topics: constructing and delimiting each theme. 4th to 7th lectures: How to collect, analyze, and review previous research: Preparing presentations that include literature reviews of previous research. ◇Second semester 8th to 11th lectures: Methods of Scientific Policy Analysis: Confirming of the logic used in research projects and analysis methods. 12th to 15th Lectures: Effective Presentation Techniques Summarizing one's research the in a PowerPoint presentation. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
The evaluation is calculated as follows: Mid-term presentations (2 or 3): total of 25%, year-end presentation: 15%, overall attendance and homework submission: 60%. Credit is not given if four or more classes are missed. |
