Outline and Purpose of the Course This course aims to empower students' social entrepreneurial aspiration and to facilitate the development of their business idea further to attract necessary resources as a start-up.
More specifically, the participants would gain skills and mind-set to firm up their business ideas to contribute to the achievement of SDGs and beyond. Social entrepreneurs will share their knowledge and experience to stimulate the participants, and experts in the relevant fields, such as design thinking, pitch effectiveness, etc., will run workshops for skills enhancement.
Course Goals Students will gain skills and mindset for social business development, and advance their social business idea.
Students’ social entrepreneurial minds and creativity will be cultivated further.
Schedule and Contents 1. Introduction (Murai/Keeley)
Briefing of the course flow, content, assignments, and schedules, etc.
2. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - introduction (Murai)
3-4 Social Entrepreneurship (Kuno, Keeley, etc.)
What defines “Social Entrepreneurship”; How to develop business model; Investors’ perspectives; etc.
5-7. Business model development workshop - design thinking framework, etc.
8. Students’ Initial Business Idea presentation
10. On incubation and accelerator programs
11-12 Fund-raising/Investor's perspective (Keeley, etc.) - Angel investors, ESG investment, Impact assessment, etc.
13-14 Effective pitch - lecture and workshop (Halcyon House staff www.halcyonhouse.org)
15 Students’ Business Proposal Final Pitch (Kuno, Keeley, Murai, externa judges)
Students finalize business plans to address any topics of SDGs, make a pitch in front of practitioners, and receive feedback. Tutorial, mentoring and coaching available by various lecturers prior to this date
Evaluation Methods and Policy 50% Class attendance and contribution;
35% Business proposal content (coherence, originality, etc.) and final pitch;
15% final essay
Course Requirements Students must have specific business idea or plan to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Just an idea is fine, but should be firm with intention to develop further during this class.
