Outline and Purpose of the Course | In this course, we will consider how Aquinas uses the term "modes" in discussing moral issues. Through the consideration, we will see the place of "modes" in Aquinas's system of thoughts. We will also aim to have a deeper understanding of the importance of "modes" in philosophy and in the history of western philosophy. | ||
Course Goals | You will obtain basic understanding of these important terms in Aquinas's thoughts--being (esse), reason (ratio), participation (participatio), mode (modus),form (forma) and matter (materia). You will also see the equivocity of these terms and the relationship between them. In addition, you will see the historical roots of these terms. | ||
