Outline and Purpose of the Course As an academic discourse on movies, the discourse from film studies, which was established in North America in the 1960s, still claims a degree of effectiveness and influence. However, this is not the only discourse on movies and there are classical theories and movie criticisms that came before the establishment of film studies, and there are many discourses developed before, or in parallel with film studies that try to present a different kind of knowledge about movies. In this course, we will study about film theory and video theory in such broad sense by focusing on several key writers and some key concepts and explore the possibilities of their discourse while also incorporating practical exercises.
Course Goals 1) Students will be able to outline the diversity of discourses over movies and a have a good understanding of the ideas of key writers.
2) Based on the above, students acquire the ability to apply this knowledge for analyzing movies and visual works.
Schedule and Contents The course plan is as follows. The classes will consist of lectures but also but also occasional presentations by students (such as a summary of the literature) and time for reading the materials.

1 - 3. Actuality of classical film theories
 Based on the recent movements of reexamination and reevaluation, we explore the contemporary possibilities of film theory before the formation of film studies. We will go over important concepts such as those proposed by B?la Bal?zs, Jean Epstein, Dziga Vertov, and Siegfried Kracauer.

4 - 6. The genealogy of film criticism
 The discourses on movies are inseparable from criticism activities that evaluate individual works. Discourses precede academic cinematic theory, lean on it, and sometimes trace the genealogy of other discourses that surpasses it. We will focus on the trajectory of French film criticism from Andr? Bazin to Serge Daney.

7 - 9. The development of contemporary film theory
 Building from classical film theory, based on the context of the intellectual climate of the 1960s, we will survey the emergence of modern film theory, which started with a new academic tool called film semiotics, and subsequent developments until the present. We will focus on Christian Mets, Raymond Bellour, and Laura Mulvey.

10 - 12. The adventure of film studies
 Within the framework of film studies, which began to become structured in the 1960s, we focus on debates that pioneered new paradigms, such as David Bordwell and Tom Gunning.

13 - 15. Film theories of philosophers
 We will look at theorists who, after the establishment of film studies, developed their own thoughts from outside of such discipline. We will particularly focus on the film theories developed by French philosophers such as Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Ranci?re.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be evaluated according to class participation (20%), in-class reports (20%), and an end-of-semester paper (60%).

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Outside of class time, since students are asked to introduce the designated literature in class, students will need to prepare the summary prior to class, and it is recommended that students read the materials for reference to further retain the knowledge and ways of thinking.

It does not mean that the content of the book is taken as such, and since the course also deals with persons and concepts that are not covered in the book, it is intended to be read as a reference along the progress of the course. There are many other materials for reference, so I will introduce them as appropriate during the lesson.
