Outline and Purpose of the Course The media is deeply involved with gender (social and cultural gender differences) in many ways. Consider the differences in how “men” and “women” are expressed in advertisements, dramas, and news coverage, as well as the differences in how men and women use the media. Differences between men and women can be found in each of the following aspects: (1) the media sender, (2) the media’s message, and (3) the media recipient. This lecture examines the social functions of gender in each aspect of “sender,” “message,” and “recipient,” referring to theories such as sociology, media research, and gender theory.
Course Goals Gender is anything that is practiced and constructed daily through various processes of daily life, such as discipline and school, from the time a person is born and labeled by gender. It has been pointed out that the media plays a large role in the construction of this gender in modern society.
Focusing on the diverse aspects of the media and understanding the nature of gender in each process will help students understand the perspectives of media research as well as understand the constructed nature of gender in each process.
