Outline and Purpose of the Course This course aims to examine “magazines,” which are an important media that cannot be ignored when considering the ideologies of the 20th century, and how we can analyze the space magazines represent. In particular, we will focus on magazines that influenced contemporary ideas, even though only a small number of copies were edited and published by a small group. More specifically, we will examine two magazines, Bunseki tech?分析手帖 [Cahiers pour l'Analyse (Notebooks for Analysis)] and Marx=Lenin shugi tech? マルクス=レーニン主義手帖 [Cahiers marxistes-l?ninistes (Marxist-Leninist Journal)], which were published by a group of students of the ?cole normale sup?rieure in Paris in the late 1960s, and examine the background, content, and impacts of the publications on the same period and on later generations by reading some texts from them. Through these contents, we aim to acquire methodological knowledge on the analysis of magazines and their intrinsic structures and their reconstruction of historical and ideological contexts.
Course Goals Students will be able to understand the methods of ideological historical analysis using magazines
Students will be able to explain the basic points of the history of French thought in the 1960s.
Students will be able to decipher texts on philosophy and ideologies and explain their points of discussion.
Schedule and Contents The course will proceed according to the following plan. However, the order and content may be changed depending on the progress and the interests of students and the content of class discussions.
