Outline and Purpose of the Course Since the 2000s, popular entertainment such as manga, anime, and games have become to be regarded as a public cultural resource. In this course, we first aim to understand the social background that brought this current status into being.
Many forms of popular entertainment have produced new content by changing or combining media formats, but recent changes in social conditions surrounding popular entertainment have enabled the showcasing of contents through media formats such as “museums” and “exhibitions.” In this course, we will consider how manga can influence the modern system of “museum” and “exhibition” by introducing manga exhibitions, events, workshops, and others in the Kyoto International Manga Museum, in which the instructor has been involved.
In the latter half of the course, students will work on a group project to plan a “manga exhibition” for the Manga Museum and present this.
Course Goals Understand that popular entertainment has emerged in a certain social and cultural context.
In addition, by planning a manga exhibition for the Kyoto International Manga Museum, students will gain a practical understanding of the creativity and limitations of “museum” and “exhibition” as media formats.
