In this course, we adopt a critical view of monarchy in Japan, Asia and Europe and its relationship to modern society. What were the dynamic origins of the emperor system when it was created in 19th century Japan? What are its legacies? How does the modern Japanese monarchy compare to monarchies in Asia and Europe?
We explore key concepts for the study of monarchy (power, ritual, restoration, and sovereignty among others) , and examine the contested relations between modern monarchies and politics, diplomacy, religion and society.
Course Goals Students will acquire the concepts and methods necessary to study modern monarchies in Japan, Asia and Europe. They will also develop the skills needed to give critical presentations.
