Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, students will read Muhammad Yusuf Munshi's Tadhkira-yi Muqim Khani, the early 18th century Central Asian chronicle dedicated to the history of Janids (or Ashtarkhanids). The main purpose of the course is to help students read Persian historical texts written in the florid prose style that was common to almost all chronicles created in pre-modern Iran and Central Asia.
Course Goals Upon the successful completion of this course, students will gain the ability to read Persian historical texts with precision.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: The Tadhkira-yi Muqim Khani and its historical backdrop will be discussed
Weeks 2-14: A study of the Tadhkira-yi Muqim Khani from the description of the beginning of the Janids' rule over Central Asia to Imam Quli Khan's (r. 1611-42) accession to the throne
Week 15: Feedback and discussion
Evaluation Methods and Policy Participation in class and preparation for reading
Course Requirements Students are expected to have basic knowledge of Persian grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to prepare adequately to read the text (about 180 minutes for each class).
