Upon the successful completion of this course, students will: (1) Have adequate knowledge on the specific characteristics of documents from Sharia Courts in Central Asia. (2) Acquire the ability to deduce reliable facts from historical sources. |

Week 1: A brief sketch of Central Asian history in the 19th and early 20th centuries Week 2: The legal systems of Central Asia under the Russian Empire Weeks 3-5: The typology of documents from the Sharia Courts in Central Asia Weeks 6-7: The flow of a trial before the Sharia Court Weeks 8-9: The modes of research on family history by drawing upon deeds and contracts Weeks 10-14: The modes of research on family history by drawing upon judicial documents Week 15: Feedback and discussion |
