Outline and Purpose of the Course This course aims to explain the possibilities of conducting research on Central Asian family history in the 19th and early 20th centuries through Sharia Court documents produced at the time.
Course Goals Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
(1) Have adequate knowledge on the specific characteristics of documents from Sharia Courts in Central Asia.
(2) Acquire the ability to deduce reliable facts from historical sources.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: A brief sketch of Central Asian history in the 19th and early 20th centuries
Week 2: The legal systems of Central Asia under the Russian Empire
Weeks 3-5: The typology of documents from the Sharia Courts in Central Asia
Weeks 6-7: The flow of a trial before the Sharia Court
Weeks 8-9: The modes of research on family history by drawing upon deeds and contracts
Weeks 10-14: The modes of research on family history by drawing upon judicial documents
Week 15: Feedback and discussion
Evaluation Methods and Policy Participation in class (50%), final report (50%)
