Outline and Purpose of the Course Each year, the Kyoto University Graduate School of Letters sends a student delegation to its partners in Europe, Heidelberg University and Strasbourg University. At each partner university, the students will come together with researchers and fellow students of the Japanese Studies department (Strasbourg) and the Master in Transcultural Studies (Heidelberg) to hold joint workshops about a given topic of historical and contemporary concern. Kyoto University GSL students currently studying in Heidelberg are invited to join this program.

In the previous years, topics included “Nationalism in the Era of Globalization,” “Peace and Conflict in Asia and Europe” and will continue to explore questions of transculturality in and between Asia and Europe.
The purpose of the two joined workshops is to engage with academic background talks by senior researchers, followed by an exchange of ideas with fellow students concerning cultural negotiation and transculturation. Students will deepen their understanding about the dynamics of transculturality and cultural exchange by studying policies, social movements but also representations in art and literature, and by expressing their own thoughts in talks.
Additionally, students will visit institutions, museums of Heidelberg and Strasbourg to learn about the history and current affairs of the cities where the partner universities are located.
Course Goals Students will acquire competence in writing, presenting, and discussing an English-language paper that relates to the topic of the workshops. They will gain practice in commenting and critiquing other papers to assist each other in giving and receiving constructive feedback. Furthermore, students will gain knowledge about EU institutions, French and German history, and the history of partner universities.
Schedule and Contents The course will be offered in accordance with the following general structure. A detailed plan will be determined during the preparation weeks for the student delegation (December to January).

In Heidelberg:
* Guidance [1 hour].
* Field research at the Documentation and Culture Center of German Sinti and Roma [2 hours].
* One-day student workshop [6 hours].

In Strasbourg:
* Guidance [1 hour].
* Field research at an institution of the European Union, e.g. parliament [2 hours].
* Student workshop [3 hours].

The students are asked to prepare readings for the workshops from December when they are announced by the instructor. By the end of January, they need to submit a presentation file (PowerPoint or Keynote) and a draft of their script.

The actual workshops will take place in the first week(s) of February.
Note: Depending on the schedule, parts of the visits may fall within Heidelberg University’s lecture period. The program will be scheduled so that it does not interfere with regular classes.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Presentation during the workshops (80%), active participation in discussions (20%).
Course Requirements Completion of module "Introduction to Transcultural Studies." Mainly for first-year student of Joint Degree M. A. Program in Transcultural Studies.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Participants need to prepare the readings designated for the workshop topic and prepare a 20-minute paper.
