Outline and Purpose of the Course Oral examination (30 min.) on overall knowledge in the field of Transcultural Studies plus one topic from the chosen study focus. Registration or completion prerequisite for Master Thesis registration at Heidelberg University.

Course Goals Objectives of module:
With the successful completion of this module students have acquired the following competences:
- Ability to present, analyse, and critically discuss the state of the art of their exam topics;
- Ability to critically relate specific research questions to a broader disciplinary field;
- Ability to present arguments in line with academic standards.
Schedule and Contents Date of the examination to be agreed upon by student and supervisor at least one month in advance.

[Important Notice] For students with Kyoto University as their home institution, this oral examination will be conducted together with their thesis defense. Students with Heidelberg University as their home institution will need to present their thesis topic pro forma in an oral defense at Kyoto University in addition to this Module “Oral Examination” after the thesis submission.
Evaluation Methods and Policy The oral examination lasts approximately 30 minutes. The examination is held by two examiners. The first examiner is the supervisor of the master’s thesis. Student and supervisor agree on three topics for the examination from the general field of Transcultural Studies and the chosen study focus. In the oral examination, students demonstrate their knowledge of the state of art in the chosen topics and their ability to contextualize specific research questions in the larger disciplinary contexts of transcultural studies.
Course Requirements Completion of modules "Introduction to Transcultural Studies", "Skills for Transcultural Studies", "Focus 1" and "Focus 2". Only for students in Division of Joint Degree M.A. Program in Transcultural Studies.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Participants need to prepare the readings designated for the Oral Master Examination.
